The summer vacation period is slowly, but surely coming to an end, however, we’re still going strong with our monthly Stats From Above blog series. If you’ve just stumbled upon it and you’re not sure what you’re delving into, let us walk you through a quick overview. Stats From Above is our monthly blog series where we share the most interesting statistics and insights from the world of business aviation. We usually take a peek at various stats such as most popular routes, busiest airports, and other interesting facts a busy business jet frequent flier might want to know. Stats from above

The business jet aviation scene is still soaring high, and the July numbers are here to back it up. We caught up with our partners over at the EBAA to better understand how things unfolded last month.

Looking at the numbers overall, this July has seen a drop of approximately 10% compared to July 2022. But compared to July 2021 the drop wasn’t as significant, with the difference being just 1%. However, it is important to keep in mind that we need to look at the bigger picture when it comes to the business jet aviation market.

If we look at the numbers historically, they tell another story. One of the greatest peaks in the number of business aviation flights in Europe was in the year 2007, with the number of business flights reaching over 750,000 flights that year. Then the Subprime mortgage crisis occurred and the numbers dropped to little over 650,000 flights in 2009. After that the market started to slowly recover until the COVID-19 pandemic occurred, recording one of the biggest drops in the number of yearly flights, which was to be expected due to all the rules in place to prevent the pandemic from spreading. So, when did the next biggest peak in flights occur?

If you were guessing 2022, then you would be right. That year the number of yearly flights climbed to almost 800,000. An astounding number. So, while looking at monthly numbers is important, it is always important to keep the bigger picture in mind.

Busiest airports and routes

Let’s move on to everyone’s favorite stats. For the past few months running the top three busiest countries by number of flights has largely remained the same. France takes the crown with 29,488 flights; The United Kingdom follows with its 21,592 flights and Germany rounds up the top three with 15,801. France’s Paris Le Bourget and Nice Côte d’Azur are two of the three most active airports by daily average business departures. Italy’s Olbia Costa Smeralda airport came in third followed by Spain’s Ibiza airport. It seems that a significant number of jet-setters have been enjoying the beaches and beach parties to be had at these iconic destinations.

Next, we’ll take a look at the routes that have proven to be the busiest over the past month. Continuing the theme from June, the route between Geneva International and Le Bourget, with 2,022 flights YTD departing from Geneva to Paris is still the busiest by far. The second busiest route is an internal French flight with 1,589 flights YTD taking off from Paris Le Bourget and descending at Nice Côte d’Azur. We can safely assume that travelers are still making the most of summer and relaxing in one of the most affluent summer destinations in France, the French Riviera. The third busiest route is also another internal flight, however, this one is in Italy. It departs from Milano Linate to Rome Ciampino and boasts 1060 flights.

Jet of the Month

July’s Jet of the Month is the Embraer Phenom 300. The jet is produced by Embraer S.A. a Brazilian aerospace manufacturer that has been producing aircrafts since 1969. The Phenom 300 has been produced since 2009 and is still being produced in modernized variations today. The Embraer Phenom 300 was based on its smaller sibling the Embraer Phenom 100 in response to customer demands for a larger version of the popular jet. As a testament to its popularity The General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) named the Phenom 300, the world’s best-selling light jet for the 11th consecutive year, with 59 jets delivered in 2022. In total, the Phenom 300 has accrued over 700 deliveries.

The jet itself is quite versatile when it comes to seating arrangements. With various configurations available it can seat from six all the way up to nine passengers comfortably. The Phenom 300 is powered by a pair of Pratt & Whitney Canada PW535E turbofan engines which provide it with a flight range of up to 3,723 km. This makes it an ideal jet for short to medium-haul flights.

As we’ve already pointed out the Embraer Phenom 300 is quite the popular jet, so you can imagine that once on offer they don’t spend too many days on the market. On average an Embraer Phenom 300E spends around 100 days on the market before being claimed by a new owner. As for the price, it’s important to keep in mind that it depends on various factors such as the jet’s configuration, age, and the number of units that are on sale at the given time. However, you’re usually looking at a price tag ranging around 12 million USD.
